«Ce qui m'intéressait vraiment, c'était d'extraire l'essence de l'usine et d'éclairer l'essentiel d'une révolution, sans traiter ni l'un ni l'autre de manière réaliste. Mais j'étais une autorité incontestée sur Hollywood, ce qui rendait difficile d'en faire une peinture non réaliste. Je me sentais plus à l'aise avec la révolution russe, car j'étais libre avec ce sujet de faire appel à ma seule imagination. » (Sternberg). Ce mépris de l'authenticité réaliste fait de The Last Command, sur une idée de film dans le film, une tentative, non pas de se livrer à une critique aiguë et distanciée de l'industrie cinématographique, mais de répondre au système hollywoodien dans ses propres termes. « What did concern me was to extract the essence of the Hollywood film factory and to flash the essentials of a revolution, without being realistic with either. I was an unquestioned authority on Hollywood, and that made it difficult to be unsealistic in picturing it. I felt more at home with the Russian Revolution, for there I was free to use my imagination alone. » (Sternberg). With its contempt for realistic authenticity, The Last Command, based on a film-within-a-film idea, is an attempt, not at delivering a sharp and aloof criticism of the film machinery, but at answering to the Hollywood system in its own terms.
