In Vineland, published in 1990, Thomas Pynchon turns back to American history, from the early days of the settlers to the Reagan era. Past and present are intimately mixed into a narrative, in a yoyo-like movement between the two poles. This paper explores the way history is written into the original space of Vineland county and shows how, despite the apparently linear progression of the story, Pynchon's unstable prose challenges not so much past history as the present.
