Hemingway's "Indian Camp" has usually been read as the story of Nick 's initiation. Far from corroborating the realistic approach, this paper's purpose is to reveal the fantasy machinery at work in the story. Exploring "Indian Camp " from the angle of enunciation shows how this text is a subjective and poetic surface, where Nick is striving to structure himself in the face of the dead distorted by fantasy into a seducing Other.
