Central points in the works of Beardsley, Goodman and Levinson show that contemporary American aesthetics maintains a privileged connection with metaphysics — which, in this case, is not a universal hermeneutics, or an attempt to penetrate a supernatural world, as in Continental philosophy. Anglo-American aestheticians understand aesthetics to be a branch of ontology and philosophy of mind and, contrary to Continental aesthetics, do not accept the so-called "thesis of the autonomy of aesthetics".
