Les transports routiers au Rwanda n'ont commencé à être développés qu'en 1924, avec l'ébauche d'un véritable réseau routier et les premiers véhicules automobiles ; ils faisaient suite au portage humain, mode de transport utilisé autant par les producteurs que par les consommateurs entre les marchés ruraux périodiques. Parallèlement à l'essor des moyens de transport, on a assisté au développement de l'infrastructure commerciale et à l'accélération du phénomène de monétarisation de l'économie. Les principaux courants d'échanges régionaux et inter-régionaux ainsi que le transport des passagers entre les préfectures sont étudiés par l'auteur et replacés dans l'économie générale du pays. Road Transportation and Domestic Economy in Rwanda. — Transportation by road in Rwanda didn't begin to be developed until 1924, with the foundation of a real road system and the appearance of the first automobiles. These took the succession of man porters, the means of hauling used both by producers as well as by consumers between the periodic rural markets. Along with the growth of transportation means, the business structure changed markedly and money was more and more widely used. The main regional and interregional exchange systems as well as the transportation of passengers between the principle towns are studied by the author and assessed for their importance in the general economy of the country.
