The Whole World is Watching de Todd Gitlin est un de ces textes fondamentaux de la sociologie américaine qui n'ont jamais été traduits en français. La traduction inédite de l'introduction de cet ouvrage, portant sur les relations entre le Student for a Democratic Society (SDS) – principale organisation étudiante nationale de la gauche radicale états-unienne qu'on a appelé la New Left – et les médias dans les années 1960, invite à (re)découvrir ce classique publié initialement en 1980. Le sociologue américain, qui a pris part au mouvement qu'il étudie, livre une analyse de la façon dont les médias ont couvert ce mouvement de la New Left dans les années 1960 et interroge ce que cette couverture médiatique a fait à la New Left et ce que la New Left a fait de celle-ci. Ce faisant, Todd Gitlin a été l'un des premiers sociologues des médias à adopter le concept de « cadre » d'Erving Goffman en l'appliquant aux pratiques journalistiques en lien avec le contenu des informations. Todd Gitlin's The Whole World is Watching is one of those fundamental texts of American sociology that has never been translated into French. The previously unpublished translation of the introduction to this work, which deals with the relationship between the Student for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the media in the 1960s, invites us to (re)discover this classic, originally published in 1980. The American sociologist, who took part in the movement he studies, provides an analysis of how the media covered this New Left movement in the 1960s, and questions what this media coverage did to the New Left and what the New Left did to it. In doing so, Todd Gitlin was one of the first media sociologists to adopt Erving Goffman's concept of ‘frame' applying it to journalistic practices in relation to news content.
