David Lewis introduit la convention au cœur des situations effectives d'action collective entre personnes visant à résoudre un problème concret de coordination, d'où des propriétés parfois insuffisamment soulignées de celle-ci : appartenance au domaine de l'action de réalisation et non au domaine cognitif ; pluralité des conventions en rapport avec la situation; validité pour une population P, elle-même identifiée de façon variable ; adhésion rationnelle à la convention ; pluralité des précédents ; non pertinence de la question de la genèse d'une convention. David Lewis introduces conventions into situations of collective action between persons wanting to resolve a concrete problem of co-ordination. Hence the following, sometimes under-emphasized, properties of this co-ordination: belonging to the domaine of the act of realization, and not to that of cognition ; plurality of conventions in keeping with the situation ; validity for a population P, itself identified in a variable way ; rational adhesion to the convention ; plurality of precedents; non relevance of the question of the convention's origins.
