Pointe-à-Pitre est le principal port de la Guadeloupe et concentre l'essentiel du commerce extérieur de l'île. Il est né au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, au fond d'une baie bien abritée, dans un site malheureusement inhospitalier. Son équipement qui résulte d'aménagements divers est hétéroclite. L'accroissement du trafic (555 541 t. en 1968, 647 707 t. en 1970) a entraîné la saturation du vieux port et l'aménagement de nouveaux quais dans le prolongement des quais qui existaient déjà, ainsi que la construction d'un nouveau port industriel chargé des manutentions pondéreuses à la Pointe-Jarry. Le trafic est très déséquilibré, les importations étant beaucoup plus importantes que les exportations ; le mouvement des navires a lieu en majeure partie avec la France. The port of Pointe-à-Pitre
Pointe-à-Pitre is the main port of Guadeloupe and handles the major portion of the island's foreign trade. It was founded in the middle of the 18 th century and is located at the far end of a well-sheltered bay, on a site that is unfortunately not very accomodating. Its facilities, the product of various improvements and additions, are out of date. The growth of maritime traffic (555,541 tons in 1968, 647,707 tons in 1970) has overwhelmed the capacity of the port and has led to the construction of new piers, which are extensions of those which already existed, as well as to the construction of a new industrial port at Pointe-Jarry that is responsible for heavy cargo handling. The trade balance is not satisfactory, imports being far greater than exports ; it is with France for the most part that ship movements are carried out.
