Julian Schutting n'est pas le premier nom qui vient à l'esprit quand on évoque la littérature de l'avant-garde autrichienne d'après-guerre. Son œuvre littéraire est souvent décrite comme avant-gardiste ou perçue comme telle dans les critiques ou les portraits d'auteurs. Cette assignation de la réception de Schutting est-elle uniquement due à des tentatives souvent mal fondées de catégoriser un auteur insaisissable ? Ou le concept d'avant-garde peut-il être utilisé pour s'approcher de manière productive de l'œuvre de l'auteur ? Un regard sur la théorie de l'avant-garde (des avant-gardes), avec un accent particulier sur la scène littéraire autrichienne depuis les années 1950, aidera à clarifier la terminologie. Au vu du corpus conséquent, l'étude de l'œuvre de Schutting, en termes de formes et d'influences de l'avant-garde, ne peut se concentrer que sur quelques exemples choisis. Julian Schutting is not the first name that comes to mind when one thinks of the literature of the Austrian post-war avant-garde, and yet his literary work is repeatedly described as avant-garde or perceived in this context in reviews or author portraits. Is this categorization on the part of the reception solely due to mostly ill-founded attempts to characterize an elusive author, or can the concept of the avant-garde be used to find productive approaches to Schutting's oeuvre? A look at the theory of the avant-garde(s) with a special focus on the literary scene in Austria since the 1950s should help to clarify the terminology. The examination of Julian Schutting's work in terms of avant-garde forms and influences can only focus on individual examples due to the vast amount of material.
