La théorie des communs explique comment des « commoneur·es » s'auto-organisent pour gérer durablement des ressources partagées, en dehors des cadres institutionnels du marché et de l'État. Toutefois, cette théorie n'intègre pas suffisamment les stratégies déployées pour se prémunir contre les menaces du capitalisme et de l'État et pour se développer en transformant ce dernier à leur avantage. En s'appuyant sur les travaux du sociologue Erik Olin Wright, cet article défend l'hypothèse selon laquelle ces stratégies politiques sont cruciales pour expliquer la soutenabilité des communs dans le temps. Leur intégration dans la théorie des communs enrichirait non seulement la compréhension des facteurs assurant leur pérennité, mais fournirait également des outils tactiques essentiels pour les acteurs du mouvement des communs qui cherchent à les instituer comme un modèle structurant de notre société. The theory of the commons explains how “commons-ers” self-organize to manage shared resources in a sustainable fashion, outside the institutional frameworks of the market and the state. However, this theory does not cover the full range of strategies deployed to protect this movement against the threats of capitalism and the state, and to develop it by transforming state mechanisms to its advantage. Drawing on the work of sociologist Erik Olin Wright, this article defends the hypothesis that these political strategies are crucial in explaining the sustainability of the commons over time. Incorporating these strategies into the theory of the commons would not only enrich our understanding of the factors ensuring their long-term viability, but would also provide essential tactical tools for those involved in the commons movement looking to establish them as a structuring model for our society.
