Cet article traite de l'évolution de la croyance dans le rôle social attribué au théâtre entre 1945 et aujourd'hui. L'intervention publique en matière théâtrale s'est historiquement fondée sur deux antiennes : la défense de la liberté de création et la vocation émancipatrice du théâtre. L'histoire du théâtre public recoupe celle de l'articulation de ces deux piliers, s'articulant dans une tension constante entre souci apporté à l'élargissement des publics et innovation esthétique. Le système de croyance qui fonde le théâtre public a ainsi évolué au gré des contextes politiques, du profil socioprofessionnel des acteurs qui structurent le champ, de son institutionnalisation, de son degré de professionnalisation, de la composition du public comme de l'évolution plus générale du champ intellectuel. This article deals with the evolution of belief in the social role attributed to theater between 1945 and the most recent period. Public intervention in theater matters has historically been based on two antiphons: the defense of artistic creation on the one hand, and the emancipatory vocation of theater. The history of public theater overlaps with that of the articulation of these two pillars, articulated in a constant tension between concern for expanding audiences and aesthetic innovation. The belief system on which public theater is based has thus evolved according to political contexts, the socio-professional profile of the actors who structure the field, its institutionalization, its degree of professionalization, the composition of the public as well as the evolution of the intellectual field.
