À partir de l'automne 1937, le PCF abandonne toute contestation ouverte de l'institution militaire, puis, lorsqu'au printemps 1938 la situation internationale se dégrade sensiblement, il apporte un soutien croissant au réarmement du pays. Enfin, à la suite des accords de Munich, il adopte une politique de défense nationale centrée sur l'union des Français face à la menace allemande. Cette orientation s'accompagne d'un engagement dans la préparation à la guerre, marqué par une relative valorisation de l'outil militaire et par une attitude favorable à l'augmentation de la production d'armements. À la veille du pacte germano-soviétique et du déclenchement de la guerre, les dirigeants communistes considèrent que la France est en mesure de faire face à la puissance militaire allemande. From Autumn 1937, the FCP abandons all overt contestation of the military institution, then support more and more the rearmament of the country when in spring 1938, the international situation deteriorates itself noticeably. Following the agreements of Munich, it adopts a true policy of national defence centered on the unity of the French against the German threat. This orientation goes along with a real commitment in the preparation for the war, marked by a relative development of military tool and by an attitude in favour of the increase in the production of armaments. On the eve of the Soviet-German pact and the breaking out release of the war, the Communist leaders consider that France is in a position to face the military German power.
