Résumé anglais The concept of memory produced in the present is a way of thinking about the past in terms of the future we long for. Thus, this study examines realms of memory;in the context of the Brazilian anti-asylum movement, with an emphasis on the Museum of Madness in Barbacena. Based on authors such as Nora (1984; 1993), Assmann (2011), and Halbwachs (1990), it discusses memory as a tool for preserving narratives of institutional violence and promoting reflections on psychiatric practices and human rights. Based on the analysis, the study highlights the role of the Museum of Madness as an active agent in denouncing the asylum system and reframing mental health care, beyond monumentalization. Furthermore, it reflects on the challenges of confronting counter-reform movements and the processes of (re)institutionalization and setbacks in mental health policies, highlighting the relevance of preserving collective memory as an ethical and political commitment. Finally, it points to the need for new investigations into other spaces of memory in Brazil, contributing to academic debates and the formulation of more inclusive public policies.
