Adorée par les spectateurs, la glorieuse incertitude du sport s'avère problématique pour la construction de l'image des collectivités territoriales et notamment celle des villes. Comment mettre en place une stratégie de marketing territorial basée sur la présence d'un club évoluant au plus haut niveau si celui-ci peut être rétrogradé rapidement dans une division inférieure ? Comment s'assurer que l'infrastructure construite aujourd'hui aura toujours un club résident de haut niveau demain ? Cet article s'intéresse aux cinq principaux championnats français de première division sur la période 2014/2015 – 2018/2019. La relation zone de chalandise – budget – résultat sportif des clubs y est analysée pour mettre en évidence des barrières à la mobilité protégeant/excluant l'accès à certains segments de compétition. Ces faits stylisés permettent aux collectivités de mesurer le risque d'aléa sportif sur l'accès du club à certains segments de la compétition, au-delà des soubresauts court-termistes inhérents à l'activité.

Adored by spectators, the glorious uncertainty of sport is proving to be problematic for the building of the city brand. How can the local authorities implement a territorial marketing strategy based on the presence of a professional club if it can quickly be relegated into the amateur world? How can they be sure that the infrastructure built today will always have a high-level resident club tomorrow? This article looks at the five main French first division leagues over the 2014/2015 - 2018/2019 period. The relation between catchment area, budget and sporting results of the clubs is analyzed to highlight mobility barriers protecting/excluding access to certain competition segments. These stylized facts allow local authorities to measure the risk of sport hazard on the club's access to certain segment of the competition, beyond the short-term shocks inherent to the activity.
