| Résumé |
La préparation et la conduite de la guerre d'Irak ont été l'occasion pour le grand public de découvrir une nouvelle figure du paysage politique : le spin doctor. Aucune définition française ne saisit de façon satisfaisante les fonctions de ce spécialiste de la communication et du marketing politique. Malgré la chute spectaculaire de Alastair Campbell, le spin doctor de Downing Street, ces « docteurs Folimage » témoignent certainement de l'évolution générale des démocraties occidentales. L'importance qu'ils ont prise, quoique variable selon les États, illustre tant la personnalisation de l'action politique que sa nécessaire articulation à une stratégie médiatique de moyen ou de long terme. Cependant, au-delà des questions universitaires que soulève, en France comme ailleurs, ce nouveau symbole de l'action politique, il suscite bien des interrogations quant à sa légitimité. Spin Doctors at the Centre of Power
The run-up to the war in Iraq and the war itself, were the occasion for the opinion to discover a new emblematic figure of the political landscape : the spin doctor. Typically English, this expression, which designates a specialist in political communication and marketing, is hardly translatable into French. Despite the dramatic ousting of Alastair Campbell from Downing Street, these « Dr Strangeimage » are symptomatic of some current evolutions in western democracies. Their increasing influence, even if the phenomenon is not uniform, testifies the personification of the political arena as well as the necessity to coordinate any political action with a communication strategy. However, beyond academic interests aroused in France and abroad by this new symbol of political action, its role gives rise to many doubts about its political legitimacy.
