En novembre 1798, quelques mois après le début de la guerre franco-ottomane déclenchée par l'expédition d'Égypte, le Directoire ordonne la création d'une agence de propagande révolutionnaire à Ancône, qui a pour but de déstabiliser l'Empire ottoman en encourageant un soulèvement dans les Balkans, notamment en Grèce. Si elle n'a existé que quelques mois, cette agence, dirigée notamment par Constantin Stamaty (1764-1817), a souvent été mise en avant pour son rôle dans la préparation d'une potentielle révolution grecque. Cet article propose cependant une réévaluation du rôle de cette agence, en la replaçant dans le contexte plus large des rivalités inter-impériales en Méditerranée orientale et des évolutions de la stratégie française vis-à-vis de l'Empire ottoman à la fin du xviiie siècle. In November 1798, a few months after the start of the French-Ottoman war triggered by the Egyptian expedition, the French Directory ordered the creation of a revolutionary propaganda agency in Ancona, with the aim of destabilizing the Ottoman Empire by encouraging an uprising in the Balkans, particularly in Greece. Although it only existed for a few months, this agency, headed in particular by Constantin Stamaty (1764-1817), has often been highlighted for its role in preparing a potential Greek revolution. This article, however, proposes a reassessment of the agency's role, placing it in the broader context of inter-imperial rivalries in the Eastern Mediterranean and changes in French strategy towards the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 18th century.
