Multi-faceted forms of tourism in Indian territories : the example of Mazatec Indians in Oaxaca, Mexico Tourism in Indian territories in Mexico has often been regarded as an activity associated with a dual relationship between the autochthonous Indians and non-Indian, allochthonous people, seen as influences that corrupt traditions. Observation of the example of the Mazatec town of Huautla de Jimenez, well known as a stronghold of shamanism, was made with special focus on relational dynamics at work in the kind of tourism that the Mazatec encounter. Such a phenomenon is not only local in character : it comes closely associated with a recognition of regional dimensions, during the Oaxaca folk festival, where the Mazatec are called on to perform a show displaying their “culture”. It is also “global”, as recognition of Huautla and its cultural symbols was instituted in the first place following a highly mediatized event of international proportions. It is also territorialized judging by events organized in situ by local people, events intended in turn for non-Mazatec allochthones and for members of a wider community, partly delocated by migrations.
