      LE GESTE ET LA PAROLE. MOBILISATION CONSCRIPTIVE ET CELEBRATION DE LA REPUBLIQUE (1879-1889) Les débuts de la Troisième République correspondent à une mobilisation des masses sans précédent, où les sociétés conscriptives jouent deux rôles ; elles servent de relais éducatif entre l'école et l'armée et donnent une vue édifiante des discours républicains et patriotiques. La pédagogie politique liant le discours et l'action accorde ainsi raison et émotion pour donner à la société le spectacle de sa force et de son union. Lyon et le Rhône montrent un zèle municipal au service de la politique officielle.
      SPEECH AND ACTION. THE MOBILISATION OF CONSCRIPTION AND THE CELEBRATION OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC (1879-1889) The beginning of the Third Republic, saw an unprecedented mobilisation of the masses, in which conscription societies played two major roles. They bridged the educational gap between school and the army, and they provided a moralising view of republican and patriotic speeches. Political pedagogy, which binds speech to action, thus brought together reason and emotion, to give society its strength and unity. Lyon and The Rhone region are given as examples of zealous municipalities serving the official policy.

      CHANGES IN FRENCH POLITICAL LANGUAGE CONCERNING SPORTS FROM 1940 TO 1944 The 1940 defeat brought about an authoritarian reform in the domain of sports and a reconsideration of the place of physical education within the French educational system. During the German Occupation, political language on sports underwent a profound rhetorical change. Its vocabulary proved to be conservative and often repetitive, but on the other hand, from 1942 onwards it was orders and prohibitions that stood out in this language.

For all their diversity, all travel-stories share a threefold purpose : to reveal, to breathe life and reality into their subjects. To achieve this goal, the travel-writer has to bring into play numerous techniques, all of which lead towards authenticating these representations.
