- Henri Brunschwig p. 5-8 H. BRUNSCHWIG — Decolonisation, Neo-colonialism: An Essay on the Vocabulary of Colonial Polilics. The new concepts of "decolonisation" and "neo-colonialism" have been forged in the late fifties. They are ratlier ambiguous and do not carry the same meaning for the former coloniscrs and the former colonized. Thus "decolonisation" can be understood either as a return to the statu quo ante or as a new situation based upon the results of the colonial domination. Similarly "neo-colonialism," understood as a form of continued economic exploitation must be explained less in terms of machiavellian politics on the part of the former colonial power than by reference to an overall economic and technological situation which differs completely frorn that obtaining at the onset of colonialism.
- Peter Grupp p. 9-15 P. Grupp — Germany in BCAF, 189I-1914. The position of Bulletin du Comité de l'Afrique Française vis-à-vis Germany and her colonial policy is generally neutral or even well disposed. BCAF showslittle or no trace of contemporary French obsessions with la revanche (recovery of the lost provinces of Alsace and Lorraine). In fact, the journal shows only moderate interest towards German overseas policy, except around 1898, when France is seeking German support against Britain, and 1905, at the time of the tension over Morocco.
- La naissance du Cameroun (1884-1914). - Adalbert Owona p. 16-36 A. Owona — The Birth of Cameroon, 1884-1914. A detailed history, based mainly on unpublished sources from the Potsdam archives of the German conquest and organisation of Cameroon. Anglo-German rivalry on tbe coast, boundary agreements with France and Britain (1885-1908, 1911), Anglo-French conquest (1914-1916); administrative organisation.
- Max F. Dippold p. 37-59 M. F. Dippoiyd — The Image of Cameroon in German Colonial Literalure. An analysis of pre-World War I German novels and travel-books with a Cameroonian setting. With a few exceptions the appréciations are mostly stéréotypes—generally patronizing or even hostile— with some tribes (e.g. the Bane and Fulbe) coming off better than others.
- Ada Martinkus-Zemp p. 60-81 A. Martinkus-Zemp — Europeocenlrism and Exotism: White Man and Black Woman in French Literature bettveen World War I and II. Analysis of the présentation of African women in French colonial novels and travel-books, 1919-1939. African women seen as mostly non-human (animais/statues), with the exception of Fulbe. African eroticism opposed to European "civilisation."
- Les révoltes des Touareg du Niger (1916-17). - Finn Fuglestad p. 82-120 F. Fuglestad — The Rebellions of the Twareg of Niger Colony, 1916-1917. Analysis of the causes and circumstances of these rebellions. French colonisation and its administrative methods were strongly grievous to Twareg interests and ways of life. Not only did the onset of W.W.I. resuit in the French losing the support of the sedentary, non-Twareg tribes, due to conscription and réquisition, but it also facilitated the spread of Senusiya propaganda wich was succesful among the Twareg for political rather than religious reasons. The western rébellion was crushed to a large extent due to the fact that the Twareg of amenokal Firhun were not supported by the sedentary tribes. In the North-East and in Aïr the situation was much more difficult for the French who were besieged more than 3 months on Agades. The pacification went on till 1931.
- Requiem for the "Jaga" - Joseph C. Miller p. 121-149 J. C. Miller — Note sur J.-B. Douville. Commentaire de l'article d'A. Stamm paru in CEA, 37, PP- 5-39.
- Henri Brunschwig p. 5-8
