  LA GESTION DE L'INCERTAIN PAR LES MÉDIAS CONTEMPORAINS DANS LA CRISE YOUGOSLAVE Cet article étudie les stratégies discursives par lesquelles trois magazines français parviennent en août 1992 à la fois à soutenir la thèse de l'existence de « camps de concentration » serbes et à afficher une certaine prudence sur la validité de cette thèse. Choix des photos et des formules désignatives, utilisation des citations et des techniques argumentatives sont au service d'une presse qui substitue l'argumentation sur le vraisemblable à la recherche du vrai.

  THE CONTEMPORARY MEDIA'S MANAGEMENT OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE YUGOSLAVIAN CRISIS This article studies the discursive strategies by which three French magazines managed, in August 1992, both to support the thesis that Serbian « concentration camps » existed and to treat the validity of this thesis with a certain prudence. The choice of photographs and designative formulas and the use of quotations and argumentative techniques are at the service of a press that substitutes arguments about plausibility for a search for truth.

  LES VARIATIONS DU REGARD SUR LES «CAMPS DE CONCENTRATION » EN BOSNIE. A partir de l'usage des photographies des camps, l'article examine comment la construction du « regard » évolue dans certains journaux français, entre 1992 et 1995. Trois tendances scopiques successives apparaissent : un regard « imposé », en référence aux camps nazis au moment de la découverte ; un regard « critique », lié à une polémique sur le rôle des médias et de la photographie ; un regard « oblique », fondé sur trois types de configurations discursives pour authentifier l'horreur.

  VARIATIONS OF THE GAZE ON THE BOSNIAN «CONCENTRATION CAMPS ». This article examines, on the basis of their use of photographs of the camps, the evolution of a « gaze » in some French newspapers between 1992 and 1995. Three successive scopic tendencies appear : an « imposed » gaze, referring to the Nazi camps at the moment of their discovery ; a « critical » look, linked to a polemic on the role of the media and photography ; an « oblique » look, which bases itself upon three types of discursive configurations in order to make the horror authentic.

  SCENARIOS DE L'HORREUR L'analyse porte sur la période du 1er au 15 août 1992 et concerne les journaux télévisés des deux premières chaînes. Les images des camps ne prouvent rien quant à leur nature et servent de fondement à une scénarisation de l'hypothétique.

  SCENARIOS OF HORROR This analysis deals with the period of August 1-15, 1992 and concerns the first two networks' television news. The images of the camps prove nothing about their nature and serve as the basis for providing hypothetical scenarios.

  LA CONSTRUCTION THÉMATIQUE DU CONFLIT EN EX- YOUGOSLAVIE PAR LES JOURNAUX TÉLÉVISÉS FRANÇAIS (1990-1994) Une première analyse quantitative, sur cinq ans, du traitement du conflit en ex- Yougoslavie par les chaines françaises a été menée aux archives de l'Inathèque. Elle permet d'évaluer le capital, la hiérarchisation thématique et la distribution en domaines scéniques de l'événement mettant en évidence les lois qui régissent la couverture de l'événement : proximité, spectacularité, partage de la compassion.

  THE THEMATIC CONSTRUCTION OF THE CONFLICT IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA BY FRENCH TELEVISION NEWS (1990-1994) The first quantitative analysis, based upon five years, of the French networks' treatment of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia has been conducted in the archives of Inathèque. It allows us to evaluate the capital, the thematic hierarchization, and the distribution of the event into scenic domains, thus demonstrating the laws that regulate news coverage : proximity, fascination with the spectacular, and the distribution of compassion.

  LA « PURIFICATION ETHNIQUE » DANS LA PRESSE. AVÈNEMENT ET PROPAGATION D'UNE FORMULE L'expression « purification ethnique » est apparue dans le discours de presse à l'été 1992. En analysant la mise en œuvre de cette expression dans un corpus de presse, on observe, d'une part, que la « purificiation ethnique » a constitué un mot-évènement, c'est-à-dire un événement dans le monde des objets langagiers, d'autre part, qu'elle constitue un mot-attracteur, c'est-à-dire une catégorie nouvelle disponible pour la description du monde.

  «ETHNIC CLEANSING» IN THE PRESS. THE APPEARANCE AND PROPAGATION OF A FORMULA The expression « ethnic cleansing » appeared in the press during the summer of 1992. In analyzing the use of this expression in a corpus of press articles, one observes two main features : on the one hand, this phrase constituted a word-event, i.e., an event in the world of linguistic objects ; on the other, it constituted an attractor-word, i.e. a new category for describing the world.
