Résumé. De 1980 à 1990, les médecins français ont eu le libre choix de leur secteur tarifaire car ils pouvaient opter pour le dépassement d'honoraires non remboursé au patient par la Sécurité sociale et ainsi choisir le secteur 2 de la médecine libérale (ou « secteur à honoraires libres »). L'article propose d'analyser cette liberté tarifaire à l'aide de la théorie des conventions. Free fees in French ambulatory medicine: an interpretation by the theory of conventions The article is an attempt to explain the evolution of the free fees in French ambulatory medicine. Between 1980 and 1990, the French liberal physicians have had the free choice of their tariff sector. Obviously, this liberty of fees can not be interpreted as an element of market. It is necessary to use the theory of convention to analyse the free fees. It is should be stressed that the theory of convention is an judicious approach to explain the free fees.
