L'objectif de l'article est de retracer l'évolution de la mortalité dans le bassin industriel de la région de Charleroi, du 19ème siècle à nos jours. Plus précisément, trois périodes clés sont analysées : la période de forte croissance démographique de la moitié du 19ème siècle, les années charnières de baisse rapide de la mortalité des 19ème-20ème siècles et la période actuelle. Il s'agit également d'une analyse comparative car le cas du bassin industriel carolorégien est systématiquement confronté à ceux d'autres milieux d'habitat : campagnes, villes traditionnelles, grandes villes, milieu périurbain... Dans des contextes d'industrialisation rapide au 19ème siècle, puis de désindustrialisation au 20ème, la mortalité dans le bassin industriel de Charleroi accuse un retard presque chronique, notamment par rapport aux régions rurales environnantes. Aujourd'hui encore, dans un contexte de crise urbaine profonde, la population de l'ancien bassin industriel de Charleroi se caractérise par une très nette surmortalité, notamment par rapport aux milieux périurbains, socialement plus privilégiés. The Mortality in the industrial Area of Charleroi during the 19th and 20th Centuries. The aim of this article is to retrace the evolution of mortality in the industrial area of the Charleroi region from the 19th century up to now. More precisely, three key period are analysed : the period of great demographic growth of the first half of 19th century, the turning point of the quick fall of mortality of the 19th-20th centuries and the present period. It is also a comparative analysis as the case of the industrial area of Charleroi is systematically compared with those of other housing settlement : country, traditional cities, big cities, suburban areas... Within the context of fast industrialisation of the 19th century and then, of desindustrialisation in the 20th century, the mortality in the industrial area of Charleroi shows up a nearly chronic delay namely in regards to surrounding country areas. Today, in a context of deep urban crisis, the population of the old industrial area of Charleroi is characterised by a very sharp over-mortality, namely in regards to socially privileged suburban area.
