      FRANCOIS MITTERRAND, CHEF DE L'ETAT, COMMEMORATEUR ET CITOYEN Lors du Bicentenaire, F. Mitterrand a tâché de parfaire son image d'intellectuel en politique et de défendre la conception jauréssienne de la Révolution. En s'appuyant sur le consensus qui entoure la République, il a utilisé la commémoration pour réaffirmer le clivage gauche/droite. La sécularisation du politique l'a amené à retrancher l'appel à l'enthousiasme républicain non sans être tenté de le réintroduire au moyen de citations ou dans le spectacle de l'ébranlement du monde socialiste.
      FRANCOIS MITTERRAND, HEAD OF STATE, COMMEMORATOR AND CITIZEN During the Bicentenary, François Mitterrand tried to polish his image as an intellectual in politics and to defend the Jauresian conception of the Revolution. Drawing from the consensus about the Republic, he used the commemorative events to reaffirm the left/right split. The secularisation of politics, has led him to withdraw the call for Republican enthusiasm, nevertheless being tempted to reintroduce it through quotations or the spectacle the collapse the socialist world.

      « LA MARSEILLAISE » OU L'INVENTION CHIMERIQUE DE JEAN- PAUL GOUDE La force de la proposition de Jean-Paul Goude, dans le spectacle « La Marseillaise », tient à un art consommé du métissage ou amalgame des genres et des formes. La qualité de cette combinatoire se doit d'être éclairée par des données biographiques, professionnelles qui, pleinement assumées par l'auteur, relèvent désormais d'une esthétique autant que d'une éthique. Mais cet art mérite aussi d'être analysé comme symptôme. Symptôme d'un moment critique dans la définition même du politique, si celui-ci ne parvient ni à se dire explicitement ni à reconduire sa formule patriotique-nationale.
      «LA MARSEILLAISE» OR JEAN-PAUL GOUDE'S CHIMERICAL INVENTION The strength of Jean-Paul Goude's proposition in the show « the Marseillaise » stems from the consummate artistry of interbreeding : amalgamating genres and forms. The quality of this combination has to be illuminated by biographical and professional information that the author fully accepts, here stemming from aesthetics as well as from ethics. But this art also deserves to be analysed as a symptom — a symptom of a critical moment in the very definition of politics if this can neither be articulated explicitly nor clearly express its national patriotic formula.

      THE 360000 ROOTS OF LOCAL DEMOCRACY : FOR A DISCURSIVE APPROACH The philosophical arguments about the tree as a figure with the aim of defining the State of Law clarify what is at stake in the « Action Guide » that was put forward to the French Communes and tested during the planting of « Trees for Freedom » on 21st March 1989. The philosophical horizon in this instance takes the place that is usually reserved for the commemorative tradition.

      QUAND L'HISTOIRE FAIT SON CINEMA Un film réalisé sur la guerre de Vendée, contre les manifestations du Bicentenaire de la Révolution française, est l'occasion de montrer les différentes utilisations de l'Histoire par des hommes de spectacle, par des politiques, par les habitants de la région et surtout par les journalistes, dont les textes composent la documentation étudiée. Par les mots employés dans la presse, différentes intrigues historiques se déploient, se télescopent dans une fabrication de l'histoire qui est peut-être la façon d'être de l'Histoire.
      WHEN HISTORY MAKES A SCENE A film about the Vendée War that runs counter to the events commemorating the Bicentenary of the French Revolution provides an opportunity for showing the different uses of history by showmen, politicians, locals and especially by journalists, whose articles make up the documentation consulted. Through the words used in the press, different historical plots unfurl and become confused in a fabrication of history which is perhaps the essence of History.

      LYON 1989 : UN 14 JUILLET EN DECEMBRE ? La position de Lyon, au regard de la commémoration du Bicentenaire, est caractérisée par la neutralisation du geste commémoratif, au cours du printemps et de l'été 1989 et le déplacement des opérations les plus significatives vers le 8 décembre. L'analyse de ce double processus appelle la prise en compte de l'histoire de la ville dans son rapport à la Révolution, de la conjoncture municipale de l'année 1989 et de l'effet ď « attracteur symbolique » exercé par une célébration religieuse.

The position of Lyons with regard to the Bicentenary is characterised by a twofold process — neutralising the commemorative event during the spring and summer of 1989, and postponing the most important events to 8th December. The analysis calls for a consideration heterogeneous data : the history of the town in its relation to the Revolution, the conjuncture of the municipality in 1989, the « symbolic attraction » effect brought about by a religious celebration.

      MICHEL VOVELLE, UN HISTORIEN DANS LA COMMEMORATION Dans les bilans historiographiques de Michel Vovelle, ce qui doit être valorisé varie en fonction des objectifs assignés au discours historique. Une lecture sociale de l'ébranlement révolutionnaire répond aux impératifs du moment commémoratif, une histoire innovante de la Révolution aux impératifs scientifiques, une réflexion à construire aux sollicitations de l'histoire immédiate. Le regard porté sur les courants historiographiques ne peut être figé, car il interroge le rapport entre production historique et demande sociale d'histoire.
      MICHEL VOVELLE, A HISTORIAN IN THE COMMEMORATION In Michel Vovelle's historiographical assessments, what should be valorised varies depending on the aims set for historical discourse. A social reading of the revolutionary disturbance corresponds to the imperatives of the commemorative moment, an innovative history of the revolution with scientific imperatives, a reflection to be constructed on the grounds of immediate history. The interpretation of historiographical currents cannot be frozen because it questions the relation between historical production and the social demand for history.
