This article starts by restating that an instrument used in subject position may often receive a truly agentive interpretation if the instrument itself is able to exert some kind of force. The author then develops two new views. The first one is about the cases where the subject instrument cannot be interpreted as an agent but as a possessor of a property: the property being such that, if used, it allows one to accomplish the action (as is the case for certain motion verbs: parallel to ces ciseaux coupent le papier = sont tels qu'ils permettent de couper le papier, we have cette route va au village = est telle qu'elle permet d'aller au village). The second issue is about complements introduced by avec: it is shown that they are not arguments of the verb itself, but one of the possible realizations of « manner » – not the manner of the action itself, as expressed by manner adverbs, but the way of doing that – allows the action to be accomplished, as appears in comment as-tu fait pour ouvrir cette porte ? Je l'ai ouverte avec ma clé. Thus, these complements can be viewed as modifiers of « v » instead of « V ». Finally, it seems that agentive verbs are not themselves giving any instrumental role.
After a brief presentation of some cognitive grammar concepts such as Semantic layering of finite clause and event integration, I will review causation's modes of expression in both French and Arabic. I will verify the hypothesis affirming that a systematic correlation exists between the level of semantic elaboration of the subordinate process and the degree of conceptual and syntactic integration with respect to the main process. This study allows us to say that the VVO construction with ‘faire' in French marks strong factitive causation, whereas the VOV order, such as with ‘laisser' and ‘obliger à…', conveys weak causation.By contrast, Arabic can express weak causation as well as two types of factitive causation: the strong one by using verbal forms II and IV, and the weak one by using the schematic verb ?a'ala ‘FAIRE' which requires an agentive landmark (i.e. complement). The polysemous nature of these processes is a particular focus of this paper, as systematic correspondences between the signification (the meaning?) of these processes and the required syntactic structure are pointed out.
The increasing linguistic complexity of 60 children aged 4 to 10 years whose mother tongue is French is studied for the first time in relation to the procedures involving reformulation that simplify or render more complex source sentences from a story that they have to retell. The syntactic opposition between simple and complex statements is reviewed from the perspective of a continuum in which both “complexification” and simplification are necessarily relative and dependent on a great many factors. The study shows, however, that the various procedures involved in the increasing complexity of a “source” utterance at the moment of its reformulation correspond to paraphrastic reformulations that are encountered in the following order: incomplete defining descriptive paraphrases, then complete ones; semantic paraphrases; formal paraphrases; transformations followed by restructurings and, finally, functional paraphrases.
In his article, P. Péroz defends a constructivist approach in lexical semantics. To this end, he chooses the example of the word canard for which, as he argues in the first part of his paper, a priori, a purely referential approach seems to be particularly well-suited. The author takes up the challenge: in the second part of his study, he demonstrates that the different ways the word is used can be considered in terms of a regular microsystem based on two factors. The first factor is closely related to the context and is called “instantiation”. It refers to the difference between the theme X and the properties of the notion N (of canard) of which it happens to be an instance. The second factor is semantic and is called “configuration”. For this instance the latter factor determines a regular type of “functioning” which applies specifically to the word canard since it systematically implies a complementary property different-from-p for an expected property p. The interaction between these two factors makes up the schematic form (“forme schématique”) of the word. In other words, according to Culioli's terminology adopted by the author, this “forme schématique” can be defined as the abstract expression of the various kinds of interaction the word is able to construct in connection with its context and which provides a unique definition of the word in the lexicon.
Nowadays, the criterion of “actualization” is very often evoked as an answer to the question of the status of the article. This argument, however, remains problematic: some linguistic theories suggest that the article is to be seen as a kind of input (“apport”) with regard to the noun, while other schools of thought use the same argument of actualization to defend the opposite position, viz. the one assuming that the article really supports the noun (“support”). This paper tries to show that the functional analogy is only apparent, since three different interpretations for the term (and the concept) actualization have been identified in literature: the possibility for the noun to cross the barrier from language to discourse, the identification of the referent and, finally, the quantification and internal organization of the referent. Because of the coexistence of three types of actualization, which we believe represents three stages of a singular linguistic process, the functional status of the article remains unclear and vague. Whether “apport” or “support” of the noun, the role of the article remains an intriguing issue.

As for many other languages, the transcription of large French spoken data usually follows standard spelling. However, such a choice is sometimes discarded in order to enhance some striking phenomena, for example the notation of the French verb il y a (“there is/are”), written as ‘y a, y'a, without the initial subject il, because it is hardly perceived in common pronunciation. This could be justified in two ways: either the transcription would be more “faithful” to familiar pronunciations or it could be related to a tendency to omit impersonal subjects in modern French, thus following a new drift in French syntax. My view is that omission of impersonal subjects is strictly limited and that it does not trigger any new evolution in the expression of the subject. The case of il y a shows a very specific phonetic situation, which makes it difficult to decide whether il is present or not. Therefore, maintaining standard spelling would be a wise solution.
