DOSSIER : NATIONS, ÉTATS-NATIONS, NATIONALISMES
- PHÉNOMÈNE NATIONAL ET ÉTAT-NATION, D'HIER À AUJOURD'HUI - François Bédarida p. 4-12 The national phenomenon and nation-state : from yesterday to today. The come-back of nations over the last ten years invites the historian to reconsider the classic definitions of nation, nationality and State. These definitions can no longer be normative and definitive. They have to be put into a context in which new approaches and new terms (ethnic group, identity) have appeared and compete, if one wants to try to characterize the national phenomenon.
- DÉCONSTRUIRE L'ÉTAT-NATION. TRAVAUX ET DISCUSSIONS - Nicolas Roussellier p. 13-22 Deconstruct the nation-state. Work in progress and questions. Before being verified or rejected by the reality of historical evolution, the deconstruction of the nation-state is first an intellectual operation. Whether it be celebrated or feared, the "nation-state crisis" deals with some presuppositions that have to be put in perspective: the presupposition of the end of empires, that of the splitting of the nation through identity politics or the idea of the entry in a new "post-national era".
- À LA RECHERCHE DUNE IDENTITÉ NATIONALE EN ALSACE (1870-1918) - Paul Smith p. 23-35 In search of a national identity in Alsace (1870-1918). If one studies the question of Alsatian national identity between 1870 and 1918, one goes beyond the simple opposition between the French idea of nation and the German conception of Volk. Alsatian identity is the resuit of an on-going social, political and cultural process and not of a spontaneous feeling.
- LA DÉCONSTRUCTION DE L'ÉTAT-NATION : LE CAS BELGE - Jean Stengers p. 36-54 The deconstruction of the nation-state : the Belgian example. Since 1830, Belgium has offered the example of a constantly changing nation-state. After the unity period of the 19th century, the emergence of Flemish autonomism and the Walloon identity crisis during the 20th century skewed the institutional and intellectual basic data of the nation-state construction. The recent 1993 Constitution is a spectacular illustration of the political and legal complexity of Belgium today.

- LES AVATARS DU STATUT DE RÉSISTANT EN FRANCE (1945-1992) - Olivier Wieviorka p. 55-66 The transformations of the status of resistant in France (1945-1992). If ever there were a juridical status that should be unequivocal and non-revisable, this is it. Alas, from 1945 to 1992, the surviving resistants were remobilized and somewhat instrumentalized several times by political forces. Their rights followed the fluctuating curve of people's thinking and "felt" the assaults on memory. Between the military and the civilian, the national virtual French dough-boy and the ecumenical militant of universal values, their civic image greatly changed. This change is analyzed here for the first time, with all its expectations, taken from the best sources.
- FRÉDÉRIC JOLIOT, LES ALLEMANDS ET L'UNIVERSITÉ AUX PREMIERS MOIS DE L'OCCUPATION - Michel Pinault p. 67-88 Frédéric Joliot, the Germans and the university in the first few months of the occupation. To save the Collège de France laboratory and the cyclotron he perfected, Frédéric Joliot decided to return to Paris in the summer of 1940. Pressure was put on him by the German authorities to turn the laboratory over to them, which he refused, but he had to accept the presence of German scientists working alongside him. The cooperation with physicists like Wolfgang Gentner and Otto Hahn extended the interests shared prior to the war. The former, known for his anti nazism, and the technical limits of the French cyclotron excluded any possibility of exploi-ting this coopération for German military research. Exasperated even before the war by the French élites failings, Joliot used his scientific prestige to develop research and participated in the beginning university resistance groups around Paul Langevin and Jacques Solomon. Although they were not in the majority, he and his friends supported Langevin, arrested in october 1940. This position became clearer through the analysis of the tensions within the university about what the attitude should be toward Vichy and the Germans. It went along with the Collège de France professors' revolt against collaborators' accusations. Far from providing an example of a "voluntary accommodation" (P. Burrin) with the occupier, Frédéric Joliot sacrificed his personal destiny as a researcher to a group project of resistance that, in addition, counted on the scientific renewal of France.
- LES CONGÉS PAYÉS EN FRANCE AVANT LE FRONT POPULAIRE L'EXEMPLE DES OUVRIERS PARISIENS DE 1919 À 1935 - Stéphane Sirot p. 89-100 Paid vacation in France before the Popular Front. The example of the workers in Paris, 1919 to 1935. Before the june 1936, vote that gave salaried workers two weeks of paid vacation, only a minority benefited from this right. Within the world of the workers, it was above all those with a status in private industry who had this rarely granted advantage. In Paris, the demand for paid vacations predated the Popular Front. It had appeared as early as 1919 in the workers' strikes before reaching a peak at the end of the 1920s. While it's true that it was not a major claim of the workers, it was nevertheless one conquest of the Popular Front that was already part of Paris's strikes in the preceding years.
POINT DE VUE
- POUR UNE HISTOIRE DE L'EUROPE SANS ADJECTIF - Jean-Pierre Rioux p. 101-110 For an adjectiveless history of Europe. The difficulties of a European history, full of geographical, conceptual, and methodological ambiguities, preclude any teleological history whose ambition would be to justify a historic march towards European Union. The strength of national histories and the role of binational confrontations in recent historical research support a history of Europe set between the national and the world, which would recall the tensions and the ruptures and would acknowledge that Europe is a contradictory form.
