This information as the authors demonstrate is an integral part of the intangible capital of private and public sector organizations. Following a look at the conditions necessary for the emergence of the notion of intangibility and developments that led to such concepts as the knowledge economy and society, they offer a panorama of the different categories of intangible assets derived from information and consider the issues of this new order of things. They conclude that we need a sustainable development approach to information that favors sharing, fairness, innovation and responsibility.

- Présentation - p. 28 “Anticipate!” you hear through the half-open door of the “technology watch house”. Stay aware to anticipate, and you can use those “knowledge nuggets” that your well-oiled process has extracted, filtered and polished to support decision-makers in their choices. That's fine as far as it goes, but once the door shuts, you're left with only a vague idea of the actual process. Strategic intelligence - a.k.a. competitive, economic or business intelligence, sometimes strategic information management and even “technology watch” - is an authentic system for managing strategic information. With its own set of dedicated software, it is indeed a complex and multifaceted discipline, one that is difficult to implement. But it has unsuspected potential, not only as an aid to strategic decision-making but also in RαD innovation and orientation. Will strategic information management services become the shining star of the knowledge and information society?
As a distinct field of information science practiced by numerous professionals, strategic intelligence continues nevertheless to raise questions (even perplexity) in the protean world of information and library science. By raising the question of goals and skills, reviewing definitions and usage and envisaging potential developments, Armelle Thomas presents, via this collection of articles by numerous experts and practitioners, a clearer vision of the issues and contributions of this “new world”.
- Les contours de la veille - Bernat Jean-Pierre, Bruffaerts-Thomas Josette, Libmann Anne-Marie, Descharmes Sylviane, Libmann François p. 32-44 If strategic intelligence has become respectable, like any recent concept it is still largely misunderstood. Seen by some as without flaw, by others just a con game, both its objectives and its methods remain vague. However, this discipline dedicated to decisional information, having earned its place in the information professions, demands specific methods. The author presents a panorama of these and reviews what we are talking about today when we talk about “strategic intelligence”.
- Les outils de la veille - Thomas Armelle, Bonny Philippe, Deschamps Christophe, Cherbonnier Marina, Cottave Mathieu, Beauvieux Alain, François Patrice p. 46-57 Collecting, processing, analyzing, disseminating, sharing - each step of intelligence tracking has its professional toolkit. The authors take us through the marketplace, focusing on current trends.
- Où va la veille ? - Mesguich Véronique, Diallo Alpha, Jdey Aref, Bergeret Céline, Dumas Stéphane, Séménéri Muriel, Asselin Christophe, Besson Bernard, Sala Jaqueline, Remize Michel p. 58-69 There has been an explosion in the number of sources, new tools and new ways to access information and new research strategies. Intelligence tracking practices have been keeping pace with the rapidly changing information landscape of the last few years, especially when web 2.0 end-users burst onto the scene. The author sheds light on the consequences of these developments for intelligence specialists and explores scenarios for the arrival of version 3.0, the “semantic web”.
