    • Colonial-Vernacular Houses of Java, Malaya, and Singapore in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries - Imran bin Tajudeen avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
This study reviews the spatial and formal translations across indigenous vernacular and European colonial architecture in the formation and development of two nineteenth-century colonial-era house forms: first, the Compound House as it was called in building drawings, and the equivalent single story, raised-floor form, the Rumah Limas, in British Malaya (today's Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore); and second, the Indies-style town residence (Indische woonhuis), which is related to, but distinguishable from, the larger, eighteenth-century country house (Indische landhuis) in Java. The discussion moves beyond the typical focus on climatic adaptation and style to consider a number of striking parallels in the interior layout and formal composition of these colonial-vernacular house forms with Malay, Sundanese (West Java) and Javanese customary house traditions, including Javanese urban dwellings. In addition, two key spatial-formal translations and their related architectural nomenclature are reviewed: the neo-Palladian portico as Malay anjung/surong, and the Javanese pringgitan or transition terrace as voorgalerij. Through these considerations, different narratives emerge that supplement or problematize the focus on Europeans in the colonies in existing studies.
It is widely considered that there is no critical mass of architecture in a homogeneous style in Ho Chi Minh City, in contrast to Hanoi. This essay seeks to establish Ho Chi Minh City's architectural heritage as a significant one, by arguing that the city does actually possess a critical mass of cohesive, remarkably well-designed buildings in modernist styles. Highlighted here is a unique feature of these modernist buildings: rounded, curved corners as a recurring motif in a dense urban center. The author argues that such buildings, dating from the 1920s through the 1970s, have provided the center of Ho Chi Minh City unique, cohesive, and striking characteristics and that they form one of the great ensembles of modernist architecture anywhere. This essay aims to re-locate the place of Ho Chi Minh City on the world map of the circulation of modernism, by emphasizing the internal dynamic of the city's architectural evolution that transcends the colonial-postcolonial divide, and highlighting the evolution of forms revealing a continuity in spite of event-based ruptures in history. The significant presence of modernist buildings with curved corners in Phnom Penh, and their similarities to those of Ho Chi Minh City, suggest that regional circulation also played a crucial role.
This essay concerns the construction and interpretation of post-independence architecture in Cambodia, taking as an exemplary case study the National Stadium in Phnom Penh, completed in 1964 and designed by Vann Molyvann. To date, most accounts of the Stadium—and of Molyvann's work and modern Cambodian architecture more generally—have emphasized Angkorian stylistic references. Considered historiographically, this focus on the temples of Angkor constructs a narrative which is teleological, and nationally bound. My counter-reading centres instead on the trope of the domestic, which enables greater attention to coeval architectural forms and broader regional intersections. The essay is based in three related approaches to the Stadium, which correspond to three interlinked understandings of the domestic. The first considers the politico-historical context of the building's construction, proposing the Stadium as emblematic of Cambodia's policy of Cold War non-alignment, under Prince Sihanouk's rule. This draws on archival work in Cambodia and the United States. The second is iconographic: it considers references to stilted wooden housing in the Stadium, as well as the repetition of architectural features from large-scale public buildings in smaller, anonymously-designed private houses. The third is a spatial and experiential reflection on the internal division of spaces within the Stadium, into smaller-scaled zones.
    • Constructing Heritage Through State Architecture in Indonesia's Riau Islands - Sarah Moser, Alyssa Shamsa Wilbur accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
Since the implementation of decentralization policies following the fall of Suharto in 1998, Indonesia's provinces have far greater autonomy, which they have leveraged to enhance aspects of their cultural identity. In the context of Riau Islands Province, a new province created in 2004, the pivot away from a centralized national focus has prompted policies that prioritize the revival of Malay culture in various spheres of life including education, the arts, and the built environment. This paper examines the cultural politics of recent state architectural projects created in the past fifteen years in and around the provincial capital of Tanjung Pinang, all of which are intended to evoke a sense of Malay cultural and religious identity. Recent state architecture seeks to channel and project an “authentic” past, often through a selective amalgamation of various recognizable historical references. In the context of current local political, racial, and religious dynamics, we analyze how versions of Malay identity are appropriated by the state in a variety of ways and manifested in recent state architecture in Riau Islands Province, and examine how this contributes to a variety of social exclusions.

    • The Ottoman-Turkish House According to Architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem - Serena Acciai accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
This is the first study that takes into consideration part of the vast and unexplored correspondence of Turkish architect Sedad Hakkı Eldem. In particular, it analyzes the portion of the accessible letters of Eldem which focus on the geographical extension of the Ottoman-Turkish house. The rediscovery of vernacular architecture had an essential role during the formation of national identity in Turkey, and this phenomenon was not an isolated case in the panorama of modern architecture in the Mediterranean. Sedad Hakkı Eldem's letters show that he had established a network of correspondents from all over the former Ottoman world, who were investigating the range and breadth of the so-called Ottoman-Turkish House. These letters take their reader on a path through the experiences of a lifetime, highlighting Eldem's professional relationships and theories and his deepest architectural passions, and offering a more personal point of view than the conventional iconographic portrayal of the “State Architect”.
