Can Russian Literature in Exile Survive? Xodesevič's Answer Vladislav Xodasevič (1886-1939) emigrated in 1922 and settled in Paris in 1925. Already a leading poet and critic when he left Russia, he became deeply concerned about the fate of Russian literature in exile, particularly about the future of the younger generation. His insistence on the necessity for young poets to acquire formal craftsmanship and to study the Russian classical heritage, and his rejection of the 'human document' as a substitute for artistic creation, have often earned him the réputation of being a conservative – yet he was one of the first to detect Nabokov's genius. In fact, he thought that Russian émigré literature should have been able not only to survive, but to find a new life by being 'authentically émigré': if it had found its unity in developing new themes and forms, then it would have fulfilled its mission of 'conservation' – the conservation of the movement of life in its constant evolution – in accordance with the great Russian tradition. - Boris Pasternak et la philologie russe des années 1910-1920 - Catherine Depretto p. 429-446 Boris Pasternak and the Russian Philology of the 1910's and 1920's This article is about the personal and intellectual links, which existed between B. Pasternak and the Russian Formalists of Moscow (MLK) and Petrograd (OPOJAZ). The point is not to show what the poet did know about the Formalist theory, but to underline the place of the poet in the critical achievements of Russian Formalism. This study is concerned not only with the most famous members of the group, but with less known members, as A. I. Romm, not only with the 'seniors' (like Tynjanov, Šklovskij, Èjxenbaum, Jakobson...), but with their 'pupils' as well (Boris Buxštab, Lidija Ginzburg, Nikolaj Štěpánov). The article particularly focuses on a study of Pasternak's poetry, written by B. Buxštab in 1928, but which could'nt be published at that time. Buxštab's work is not only an interesting contribution to the Pasternakian studies, but deals also with the broader context of the post-formalism.
- Un cas de palimpseste : sous Deux d'un coup (Amândoï) de Rebreanu, Crime et châtiment ? ou Le roman comme fabrique de l'homme - Pierre-Yves Boissau p. 447-460 Under Rebreanu's Both (Amândoi), Crime and punishment? The novel Amândoi (Both), published in Romania in 1940, is to be analysed as a rewriting of Dostoevskij's Crime and punishment. Beyond puzzling détails, we acknowledge in both authors the same interrogation on man' s humanity and its limits, as well as the same affirmation of mankind: enduring mankind, in spite of its failures, and in spite of crime, which is usually supposed to deprive man of his humanity. The leader of Romanian realistic school, however, insists on the actual lack of transcendance and love in our world: lack which leads the main character, an original blending of Raskol´nikov and Sonja, to commit suicide – the same suicide of which Raskol´nikov, in the Russian novel, appeared unguilty (Svidrigajlov commit il for him). In an other way, the part played by foreign people and national identity (Russian or Romanian quality) completely changes when Rebreanu writes his Crime and Punishment. In addition to the fact that the common places of détective and crime novel are altered by this reading of the famous Russian novel, some prejudices of Dostoevskij's masterpiece are somehow corrected.

- Les premiers manuels de commerce bulgares et les influences européennes au XIXe siècle - Ivan Roussev p. 473-483 The First Bulgarian Business Textbooks and European Influences in the Nineteenth Century The article examines the first Bulgarian business textbooks, which appeared in the final decades of the National Revival Period (1830-1870). The more than 200 books printed in this era provided Bulgarians with important knowledge for succeeding in business in such areas as accounting, geography, arithmetics, and world history as well as foreign language dictionaries and conversation guides either directly or indirectly related to business or its practical applications. It is possible to trace the European (and especially French towards the middle of the century) influence of which these manuals are the resuit. The theme of business manuals is only an introduction to a much more widespread issue: the role of business modernization and Europeanization on nineteenth-century Bulgarian society.
- Encore sur la conjonction russe a to - Olga Inkova-Manzotti p. 485-497 Again About the Russian Conjunction a to This article aims to prove that the functionment of the Russian conjunction a to can receive a unifíed description, based on a semantic nucleus common to all its usually recognized employments. The conjunction would always refer – thanks to the properties of its components : conjunction a and pronoun to – to a discourse universe w"alt", opened by the tacite proposition – p which is extracted from the left context, so that the proposition q which follows a to should be true in w"alt". The conjunction thus correlates the propositions p and q which are true in alternative discourse universes. The variate uses of a to could then be an effect of the diversity of its semantic components, still this diversity always obeys to a general constraint posed by a to on p and q: their belonging to alternative discourse universes.

Titov Criticism The debate on L. N. Gumilev' s works filiation which is opposing Vjačeslav Ermolaev and Aleksandr Titov to me may be viewed as a very specialized topic. Nevertheless, the stakes connected to this controversy are relevant and concern some very important elements of the Soviet and post-Soviet intellectual life. The main point in this controversy is not the filiation between the Eurasianism founding fathers and Gumilev but more specifically the originality of the latter facing the formers. Indeed, the main focus of this debate is how to define Gumilev' s thought concerning ethnicity and to analyze whether his theories can be viewed as a part of the ethnological Soviet science.

- Limage de la femme dans l'œuvre de Čexov : un itinéraire poétique - Françoise Darnal-Lesné p. 565-570 The Representation of Woman in Chekhov's Prose and Dramaturgy Čexov' s works are the representation of the struggles which are part of fin-de-siècle Russia. In a complete independence of mind, either political or religious, and with an objective point of view, Čexov explores the different 'path' taken by the woman in her fight to escape the burden of being born female, which means being trapped in a nest by the others and herself, he observes the accesses of hysteria and morbidity, apparent unique fate for her. The 'writer-doctor' points out that she is not necessarily condemned to such a destiny. When moved by an irrésistible strength of her own, she decides to go forwards, he observes that her discovery leads her, step by step, to ultimate liberty. Čexov foUows her when crossing the frontier, first topographically, geographically and psychologically, then, and for her best, philosophically and spiritually, which leads her to her own truth. Not many of these women are able to succeed and achieve what we can call a 'revolution' compared to the context of the XIXth-century Russian literature. Such a poetic and particularly interesting representation of the woman ranks Čexov as an innovating writer, a modern one.
