      François Chazel : Observations regarding and based on "Confucianisme et taoïsme". First the author points out the importance of the « Introduction » to "L'ethique economique des religions mondiales" [The economic ethic of world religions] in order to understand the approach made by Weber and regrets that this was not placed at the beginning of the volume devoted to "Confucianisme et taoisme" [Confucianism and taoism]. He also underlines the fact that the English-speaking reader has for a long time benefited from more favorable reception conditions, despite any reserves one may have concerning the English translation. Finally, and more essentially, he goes on to reconsider a major theme of the book-political domination. Thus Weber recognizes the role of hydraulic regulation in the development of bureaucracy without relating it, as does Wittfogel, to the principles of domination. He especially points out the effectiveness of the politics followed by the emperors aiming to avert any appropriation of employment and so doing, avoiding the re-forming of a feudal order. He strongly emphasizes the points which differentiate, despite the exam system, Chinese bureaucracy from modern bureaucracy, in other words the absence of dissociation between administrative spending and personal spending and the fundamentally literary character, not at all specialized, of the training. However, he does show, at the same time, the way in which the political weakness of the body of civil servants conciliates with their cultural pre-eminence, the well-read tradition forming an expression of cohesion and a legitimization of the imperial order.

      Une analyse critique de la nouvelle traduction de "L'Éthique protestante et l'esprit du capitalisme" (traduit par Isabelle Kalinowski) fait apparaître une série d'errements, dus à une précipitation évidente, mais aussi, plus gravement, à une large ignorance tant de l'univers conceptuel et sémantique de Max Weber que de l'histoire et de la théologie protestantes. La gravité et la multiplicité des erreurs ne peuvent pas être sans effet sur une compréhension fine de ce texte phare des sciences sociales ; elles sont telles qu'on est en droit de s'interroger sur l'ethos qui a présidé à la réalisation de ce travail.
      Jean-Pierre Grossein : Views on a new translation of "L'Éthique protestante et l'esprit du capitalisme". A critical analysis of the new translation of "L'Ethique protestante et l'esprit du capitalisme" [The Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism] (translated by Isabelle Kalinowski) brings to light a series of errancies, due to an obvious haste, but equally, and more seriously, to a wide ignorance of both the conceptual and semantic universe of Max Weber and of the history of protestant theology. The gravity and the multiplicity of errors cannot avoid having an effect on the deeper understanding of this venerable text on social sciences ; their impact is such that one can but question the ethos which reigned over the realization of this task.

  • La mise en équivalence de la formation avec l'emploi dans les IVe et Ve Plans (1962-1970) - Lucie Tanguy p. 685-709 accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais avec indexation
    C'est dans le cadre du Plan, entreprise collective de développement économique et de modernisation de la société française, que la notion de formation, notion promue en lieu et place de celle d'éducation, a été pensée comme une grandeur mesurable, posée au fondement de la qualification. L'article qui suit décrit ces opérations sociales de définition, de codification, de mise en équivalence entre des phénomènes jusqu'alors perçus comme distincts et sans liens nécessaires et systématiques. Au cœur de ces opérations se trouve la construction des nomenclatures de formation qui, élaborées à des fins techniques, essentiellement de prévision des flux de population à scolariser au regard des projections d'emploi par niveau de qualification, ont présidé à des représentations durables du monde social qui guident les politiques publiques et les comportements individuels. La pérennité de ces nomenclatures traduit la force des représentations et des croyances collectives qui les sous-tendent et résultent de la convergence d'actions menées, durant les années soixante, dans différents lieux de la société et dont le Plan a fait la synthèse. Autant de faits qui sont à l'origine de cette expression nominale « la relation formation/emploi », aujourd'hui assimilée à un nom commun désignant une chose établie.
    Lucie Tanguy : Finding the equivalences of training in relation to employment during the 4th and 5th Plans (1962-1970). It was within the framework of the Plan, the collective enterprise for economic development and modernization of French society, that the notion of training, promoted on behalf of the notion of education, was imagined as a measurable dimension, on which qualification could be based. The following article describes the social operations for defining, codifying and providing equivalences for phenomenons which until this point were considered as being distinctive and without necessary or systematic links. At the heart of these operations was the construction of lists of training which, developed for technical reasons, more particularly to forecast the population flow requiring education in relation to the employment forecasts for each level of qualification, prevailed over the lasting representations of the social world, which guides the public policies and the individual behaviour. The durability of these lists indicates the strength of representation and collective belief which are behind them, resulting from the actions led during the 1960s in different parts of society and of which the Plan made a synthesis.   • Fluidité industrielle, fragilité organisationnelle - Gwenaële Rot p. 711-737 accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais avec indexation
    L'article interroge la façon dont les usines Renault se rapprochent aujourd'hui de cet idéal de gestion qu'est la fluidité industrielle. Une succession de solutions techniques hétérogènes (ligne de fabrication automatisée, chaîne de montage manuelle) ; une accumulation de dispositifs managériaux et procéduraux structurent et organisent la continuité de la production (en termes de qualité/coûts/délais) en jouant sur les dimensions techniques et sociales de la fluidité industrielle. L'articulation de ces voies d'accès à la fluidité révèle un fonctionnement construit sur des bases éminemment fragiles qui ne tiennent que grâce à l'existence d'un travail de compensation volontairement flou des acteurs du flux. Ce travail mobilise des formes de régulations sociales qui dépendent largement des systèmes socio-techniques dans lesquels elles s'inscrivent. Mais loin de renvoyer à des régulations autonomes relativement stabilisées et convergentes, ces pratiques sociales sont elles-mêmes construites « au fil du rasoir ».
    Gwenaële Rot : Industrial fluidity, organizational fragility. This article looks into the way in which the Renault plants today tend towards the management ideal known as industrial fluidity. A succession of heterogeneous technical solutions (fully-automatic production line, manual assembly line) ; an accumulation of managerial and procedurial systems structure and organize the continuity of production (in terms of quality/cost/delivery time) by acting on the technical and social dimensions of industrial fluidity. The linking of these accesses to fluidity reveals a set up based on eminently fragile foundations which resist thanks to the existence of voluntarily hazy compensation work from the flow operators. This work puts into action forms of social regulation which depend largely on social-technical systems of which they are a part. But far from this being relatively stable and converging autonomous regulation, this social practice is itself developed along a « razor edge ».

    La production scientifique de Bronislaw Malinowski a débuté plusieurs années avant l'enquête ethnographique qu'il mena aux îles Trobriand durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Nous entendons montrer ici à quel point son tout premier ouvrage "The family among the Australian Aborigines. A sociological study" (1913) constitue une matrice de ses recherches ultérieures. L'auteur y pose les fondations de ses innovations méthodologiques futures et y esquisse ses premières analyses des phénomènes de parenté. Par ailleurs, Malinowski accorde d'emblée un rôle crucial à l'ignorance de la paternité physiologique qui existerait chez certains peuples primitifs. Sur ce point, Malinowski ne supporta jamais la moindre contradiction. En particulier, lors d'une controverse qui l'opposa à un administrateur colonial, Alex Rentoul, il adopta un ton dont la brutalité invite à s'interroger sur la dimension transférentielle de cette thématique.
    Bertrand Pulman : Malinowski and not knowing one's paternity. The scientific works of Bronislaw Malinowski started several years before the ethnographical study he carried out on the Trobriand Isles during the first world war. Our aim is to show to what extent his first work "The family among the Australian aborigines. A sociological study" (1913) forms a mould for further research. Here the author lays down the foundations for his future methodological innovations and draws the outlines to his first analyses of parenthood phenomena. Furthermore, Malinowski from this point gives crucial importance to the lack of knowledge regarding physiological parenthood which exists in certain groups of primitive people. On this issue, Malinowski never stood the slightest contradiction. In particular, during a controversy opposing him to a colonial administrator, Alex Rentoul, he took on such a brutal tone that one could wonder about the transferential dimension of this theme.
