The rules of the Second World War and its consequences, one of which is the ideological bipolarization of the world, are intertwined with the aspirations of African peoples, once colonized, to take charge of their destiny, especially from a cultural viewpoint. This paved the way to several experiences, some of which developed in certain independent or soon to be independent countries from the former GDR, following the relations that they managed to establish. The paradigm of organization and management of material cultures will change, because art and culture have become weapons against imperialism and of national liberation. Missions from museographers will follow in certain territories to contribute to their reorganization and to train different actors to new methodologies. This article questions, on the one hand, the process of legitimization of the national cultures involved and, on the other hand, the limits of this new paradigm.
This article explores one of the first missions of museum expertise carried out by UNESCO in the postwar period in the context of its “museum crusade.” With the purpose of reorganizing the National Museum of Kabul, this mission was entrusted from 1957 to 1960 to Jean Gabus (1908-1992), curator of the Ethnographic Museum of Neuchâtel from 1945 to 1978. Starting with this example, this text shows how experts came together to train the local staff, draw and arrange the buildings, restructure the institutes, and manage their collections. To this end, Jean Gabus actively took part in establishing systems of thought and action that guarantee the introduction and perpetuation of Western ideas of heritage, culture, science and State, presented as universal.
The Ivory Coast Musée des Civilisations, of colonial origin, is historically linked to the program developed by the French Institute of Black Africa (IFAN) starting from the 1940s. The main figure was Bohumil Holas, a French ethnologist of Czech origin, who managed the Museum of Abidjan from 1948 to 1978. Mixing personal strategies and scientific or museumlike programs, he managed to arrange collections with scientific, esthetic, and political values to be used for internal and external political issues: organizing the inventory of ethnicities that form the new independent nation and developing a useful system of museum diplomacy for the Ivorian power. And we should not forget the networks the ethnologist belonged to, which outline other geopolitics of African museums in the age of decolonization.
This article questions the relevance of the ethnographic museums as museum form, not in their European context, but in a postcolonial context—a dimension that is surprisingly absent from reflections on the decolonization of ethnographic museums— starting with the case of the province of Sindh in Pakistan. It is about understanding how ethnographic museums take part in a process of folklorization of the culture of Sindh, particularly through folkloric research carried out in provincial cultural institutions and within a policy aiming to establish a new field, the “sindhology”—the study of Sindh. In ethnographic museums, representations folklorized through dioramas recreate the essentialist view of colonial ethnography without straying from the hierarchy of values between national culture and “subculture”, whether they are regional or specific to certain social groups. Thus, in the case of Sindh, if the postcolonial ethnographic museum allows to stand against the domination of the State of Pakistan, it also recreates the existing power relations.
The project of the Museum of Modern Art of Algiers (Mama), born the day after the independence, in the wake of the first Pan-African Cultural Festival of Algiers and through the donation of a collection of modern art works from several international artists, was only established in 2007. The first Algerian and North-African museum that was dedicated to modern art and that was founded outside of colonial governance, Mama, through its explicit reference to MoMA in New York, seems to put the Algerian capital on an international map that is more inclusive of institutional exhibitions of contemporary artistic creation. As a display of local, regional, continental, as well as international designs, does Mama represent the breaking of ties or, on the contrary, the compromise with a certain hegemonic definition of artistic modernity? Active for more than ten years and having expanded its collections through new donations, the analysis of exhibitions and publications made by Mama allows us to question, since the post-colonial era, a possible emancipation of artistic accounts, even the idea of modernity at the museum.
The history of Syrian museums is like an ouroborus, a snake that endlessly eats its own tail. These institutions, some of which are a hundred years old, have never ceased to oscillate between their liberation from an Ottoman occupying force, freedom, independence, the establishment of a new French occupying force, independence again, and, later, the arrival of a totalitarian regime still in power today despite the Syrian revolution and civil war. We will study Syrian museums in the history of the 20th century, world order, and the context of colonial practices represented by archaeology and museology. How can we analyze the mechanisms that were used through the history of Syrian museums a century ago?

    • Poto-Poto, 1946-1960s.
The history of the African Art Studio of Poto-Poto started in 1946, but was only made official in 1951 when it was named African Art Center, which seems to have outshone its first years of existence. Its name since the start of the 1960s, école de peinture de Poto-Poto, tends to replace the previous ones through that period and provides a discursive continuity and artificial esthetics between the first two generations of artists who have frequented or have gravitated around the art center until the end of the 1960s, and the next decades, up to the current stage–a continuity that maintains a narrative blur that looks like a positive national account. This article reflects on the material available to reorganize that blur. It implicitly questions the possibility of rewriting a fragmented history of arts whose actors—their works, their voices—would be absent.
We have two paintings by édouard Pignon, the first one, called Solidarité, painted in 1936, and the second one, called L'Ouvrier mort, painted after the war, in 1952. From one image to another, a clear break in the way of painting, combined with the permanence of the theme, gives this work in two parts the function of a manifesto in the eyes of the artist, in search of what Cézanne called “the truth in painting.” From the first sketches to the construction of the painting, the creative process implemented and the explanations provided by the painter himself testify to a double commitment: on the one hand, fidelity to his native environment (that of the miners of the North) and to his first political positions and, on the other hand, the search for a new pictorial language, which breaks from socialist realism and translates the reality of a society in movement.By highlighting its performative dimension, édouard Pignon's case thus brings some elements of presentation to an artistic regime of truth.
