I - L'anglais américain. American English
- Avant-propos - Guy Jean Forgue p. 1 page
- A Jacksonian view of American English - Michael Miller p. 7 pages Une vision jacksonienne de l'anglais américain. Les Virginia Museum papers sont ici étudiés pour montrer l'état de l'anglais américain à l'époque de la Présidence d'Andrew Jackson, la méthodologie linguistique alors employée, et pour donner une théorie nouvelle quant à son auteur. An examination of a little-known text on 1830 American English, which gives us clues as to its mysterious writer, the linguistic methodology then practised, and the language spoken in North America at a time of radical change.
- H.L. Mencken, American stylist - Merritt Moseley p. 10 pages H. L. Mencken, styliste américain. Analyse du style de H.L. Mencken, et de ses procédés rhétoriques, où sont mis en évidence ses rapports avec la tradition américaine et la vision que Mencken a donnée de l'anglais américain dans The American Language. An analysis of H.L. Mencken's style and its rhetorical devices showing a connection with the American tradition and Mencken's own view of the native idiom in his American Language.
- Fréquence lexicale comparée de l'anglais britannique et américain : état de la question - Henri Bejoint p. 11 pages Une comparaison chiffrée entre deux corpus de textes variés, l'un américain (Brown), l'autre britannique (LOB), révèle une série de différences importantes dans l'emploi du lexique. Si on les compare avec celles, plus impressionnistes, des glossaires courants, on trouve des divergences dont on peut se demander si elles sont le fruit du hasard ou si elles reflètent une réalité culturelle.A Comparison of Lexical Frequencies between British and American English : the State of the Art. A numerical comparison between the Brown corpus (American English) and the LOB corpus (British English) presents substantial difference in the use of the lexicon. When compared with the more subjective ones found in current glossaries, those divergences raise the question : are they coincidental, or do they reveal different cultural realities ?
6,000 Words, a supplement to Webster's Third New International, is analysed statistically in order to give an accurate list of new word formation devices in English since 1961 : morphosemantic, semantic, morphological neology and borrowing, an enterprise that will make it possible later to compare the findings with the subsequent evolution of English.
American Phrasal and Prepositional Verbs. Most American phrasal and prepositional verbs are understood and used by the British, as is shown by a survey carried out in the XJ.SJL and in the U.K. between 1970 and 1980. These verbs are here gathered together according to semantic fields (business, games, Far West) and according to subcultures (i.e., drug addicts) or ethnic groups (i.e., Blacks). Finally semantic changes affecting verbs concerning mal/female, relation ships highlight a revolution in sexual mores.
- The Norm in American English - Guy Jean Forgue p. 11 pages La norme en anglais américain. Qu'est-ce que l'anglais américain « correct » ? Qui détermine la norme linguistique aux Etats-Unis et sur quels critères ? L'auteur retrace la longue bataille des normativistes depuis la guerre des dictionnaires au siècle dernier jusqu'aux querelles et aux incertitudes actuelles.Poetry : Theory and Practice of Irrational Translation. Speaking of form that convention calls poetry, the author opposes all linguistically oriented theories that exclude or attack the ineffable in literary translation. Translation is treated as an aspect of other activities, the movement of metaphor, the making of a poem, the origin of language itself. All show how both the mythic, irrational and the conscious, linguistic coexist in the elaboration of the ineffable emotional impulse, which the author asserts to be irreducible and unreplacable. An analysis of Blake's short poem « The Sick Rose » and five French translations illustrate the thesis.
II - Aspects de la traduction littéraire. Aspects of literary translation
Poetry : Theory and Practice of Irrational Translation. Cantos, Translation — Misadventures of the Original. Ezra Pound did not try to translate « well », but to create through translation a « new beauty » that would be something more than the original. Pound became quite sure of this idea toward 1917-18 ; it helped him to free himself when he started re-writing the Cantos in 1923. There Pound enacts four forms of « liberation » from the original, two of which are fundamental : « fading » {moving further and further away from original), and « crumbling » {juxtaposition of shorter and shorter bits of quotations). Also to be found are related original and defaced original. Thus Pound developed a double system based both on his absence from his own text and on injunction, which led to a typically poundian practice of watchwords in the Cantos.
About Gertrude Stein : the Dreamed Translation. To translate Gertrude Stein does not mean necessarily translating the meaning, which is meant to be elusive, but reproducing, somehow, a dramatic effect, an emotional affect. In some of Stein's writings, translation is at work in the original text itself, through playing with two languages at once. People's names are a separate problem : how do they « translate » ? And how do you translate the sound of the voice into writing, or an American voice into a French voice ? To accept the fact of not understanding everything may be one of the unobtrusive tasks of the translator, together with trying not to be in the way. Maybe the impossible model is that of a love relationship.
On Translating Metaphor : the Translator as Writer. Working upon examples drawn from The Red Badge of Courage, Absalom, Absalom ! and The Hamlet, this paper questions the French translation of a few symbolist metaphors on the ground that it does not take into account their « nodal » value (as key-episodes in the narrative and/or in characterization) or their « tonal » value (as modulations in a symbolic system), and it suggests that we see literary translation as a highly ambiguous activity illustrating the « theoretical drama » of being at once transitive (the scrivener) and intransitive (the writer).
The translator's technique is based both on conscious and unconscious grounds, and, as any other, is relevant of a psychoanalytical approach. Can it rely on the psychoanalyst's method ? The freudian school suggests that the Traumdeutung, in which Freud translates the language of the unconscious into clear terms, could provide the translator with a model. Jung sets the signs of language, used for communication, apart from the dream — symbols, embodying the transformations of libido. He advocates the virtues of ambiguous language and warns interpreters against any pretence at exhaustive translation. Any genuine mediation works between two shadowy zones.
